Where it came from
Island, numbered 236, was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Zendikar block, it shifted the narrative from a land-exploration theme to a cosmic horror story featuring the Eldrazi, ancient entities threatening the multiverse. The artwork for this specific land reflects the set's signature aesthetic, emphasizing the dramatic and often alien landscapes of the plane of Zendikar.
The piece was illustrated by Veronique Meignaud, who contributed several landscape designs to the set. Her approach for this card utilized a distinctive, painterly style that departed from the more traditional realism found in earlier Magic sets. The artwork was well-received by players for its vibrant use of color and abstract composition, which helped reinforce the otherworldly atmosphere central to the Eldrazi storyline.
