Where it came from
This Island card was released as part of the Commander Anthology Volume II set in 2018. It is a reprint of a basic land originally featured in the Commander 2014 product line, designed to provide players with a cohesive aesthetic for their multi-player decks. The anthology was curated by Wizards of the Coast to bring together high-demand reprints and popular deck archetypes from the history of the Commander format, ensuring that iconic card styles remained accessible to the expanding player base.
The illustration, created by Nils Hamm, depicts a serene, painterly vision of a coastal landscape characteristic of Hamm's atmospheric style. His work for Magic: The Gathering is frequently noted for its ethereal color palettes and focus on natural environments. This specific card design was well-received upon its initial release in 2014 for its departure from the more traditional, literal depictions of terrain, and its inclusion in the 2018 anthology helped cement its status as a favored basic land among players who prioritize artistic consistency in their deck builds.
