Where it came from
Released in October 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion set for Magic: The Gathering, this Island was designed to reflect the set's central narrative theme: the Phyrexians' massive, plane-spanning invasion of the world of Dominaria. The expansion marked a pivotal point in the game's lore, emphasizing a coalition of disparate cultures banding together to defend their home, which necessitated a visual shift toward landscapes that felt both familiar and under existential threat.
The artwork for this specific card was created by Rob Alexander, a prolific artist in the early years of the game known for his atmospheric landscapes. Alexander employed a distinct, painterly style that emphasized the dramatic, sweeping horizons of Dominaria's coastal regions. Upon release, the card was widely received as a definitive aesthetic of the era, praised for its clarity and the sense of scale it provided within the standard land cycle, establishing a visual baseline for the Invasion set's natural environments.
