Where it came from
The 2002 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own exact replicas of the decks used by the top eight finishers at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship held in Sydney. These decks were printed with gold-bordered backs and signature-stamped cards to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards, serving as a pedagogical tool for enthusiasts to analyze high-level deck-building strategies from that specific competitive era.
This particular Island illustration comes from the Odyssey block, which focused heavily on graveyard mechanics and a darker, more atmospheric aesthetic. The artwork was designed to contrast with the lush landscapes of previous sets, leaning into a more desolate and mysterious interpretation of a tropical island. Within the 2002 World Championship product, this specific card represents the foundational resource base used by professional players to stabilize their mana curves during the complex competitive meta of that year.
