Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion, this Island card represents one of the earliest instances of a basic land cycle being illustrated by a consistent artist across multiple versions. The Urza's Saga set was designed to explore the deep lore of the artificer Urza, marking a significant narrative shift for the Magic: The Gathering franchise by grounding its cards in an epic, ongoing saga.

The artwork for this specific card, collector number 338, was created by Rob Alexander. Alexander focused on atmospheric landscape work, opting for a serene and expansive depiction of water that departed from the more jagged, aggressive fantasy aesthetics prevalent in earlier sets. Upon release, the card was widely received as a hallmark of the game's evolving artistic maturity, becoming a staple for players seeking a cohesive, painterly look for their decks.
