Where it came from
The 2012 Island card from the Planechase set release was designed to provide thematic, basic land support for the supplemental multiplayer product. Planechase 2012 expanded the reach of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse by introducing unique planar decks, and the accompanying basic lands were selected to align with the atmospheric aesthetic of the planes featured in the product's narrative framework.
The illustration for this specific Island was created by Jung Park, a prolific artist known for his work on high-fantasy landscapes. Park’s vision for this piece centered on a sweeping, tranquil horizon that emphasizes the vast, isolated nature of the terrain. The card was well-received by the player base for its painterly style, which diverged from the more clinical, digital-focused card art trends of that era, cementing it as a notable entry in the collection of post-2010 basic land illustrations.
