Where it came from
This Island card was released as part of the 2014 Duel Decks Anthology, a boxed set designed to celebrate the history of the Duel Decks series. The anthology collected four previously released pairs of decks, with the Jace vs. Chandra component specifically revisiting the 2008 original. This re-release provided players with an opportunity to acquire cards from the inaugural Duel Deck set, which had long been out of print and highly sought after by collectors of thematic, preconstructed Magic: The Gathering products.
The art featured on this specific card is drawn from the classic Jace vs. Chandra iteration, originally illustrated by John Avon. Avon is widely recognized for his quintessential landscape illustrations within the game, aiming to capture the serene, ethereal quality of high-fantasy environments. His work on this series was well-received for its atmospheric depth and consistent visual style, which helped establish the aesthetic identity of the Jace and Chandra Planeswalker duel.
