Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, this Island is a core basic land card. The set marked a shift in the game's narrative and aesthetic, focusing on the post-apocalyptic plane of Otaria. The art style of this era favored a high-fantasy, atmospheric look that emphasized the magical energy of the environment.

The artwork for this specific card was commissioned from artist John Avon, who is widely regarded as one of the most iconic landscape illustrators in the game's history. His design for this Island emphasizes depth and ethereal light, utilizing a clean, panoramic composition that became a hallmark of the Odyssey basic land cycle. The card was well-received by players for its clarity and the immersive quality of its scenery.
