Where it came from
The Island card from the Rivals Quick Start Set was released in 1997 as part of the Magic: The Gathering starter product line. Designed to introduce new players to the game mechanics following the release of the Mirage block, this specific iteration features art by Pat Morrissey. The set was created to offer a simplified entry point, stripping back complex interactions to focus on core deck-building concepts and the fundamental nature of land cards in the game.
The visual design of this Island adheres to the classic aesthetic of mid-nineties Magic: The Gathering, emphasizing a minimalist, functional approach to the landscape. Morrissey’s illustration reflects the era's transition toward more varied and atmospheric card art, intended to ground the player in the fantasy world while maintaining clear readability during gameplay. Upon release, the set was well-received by the community as an effective pedagogical tool for growing the player base.
