Where it came from
The Island card from the Eighth Edition Core Set was released in 2003 as part of the first modern-frame expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a significant visual shift for the game, transitioning from the classic card frame to a redesigned, sleeker aesthetic intended to modernize the brand's identity and improve text legibility for a global audience.
The artwork for this specific card features a piece by the artist John Avon, whose landscape illustrations became synonymous with the game's sense of scale and atmosphere. In this iteration, Avon employed a painterly, serene approach to the classic island concept, favoring clean lines and soft lighting that exemplified the new graphic design standards of the Wizards of the Coast art direction team at the time.
