Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Unlimited Edition of Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 as part of the game's second core set. Following the immediate success and rapid sell-out of the Alpha and Beta print runs, Wizards of the Coast produced Unlimited to meet overwhelming player demand. Like its predecessors, it served as a foundational resource card, providing the blue mana necessary to cast spells and activate abilities throughout a match.

The artwork for this specific card features a classic, serene coastal landscape, echoing the aesthetic direction established by early Magic illustrators to evoke a sense of high fantasy world-building. These base land cards were designed to be functional and evocative, intended to ground the game's mechanics in a cohesive, immersive setting. While often overlooked due to their abundance in the early sets, these cards are now highly regarded by collectors for their historical significance as the building blocks of the trading card game genre.
