Where it came from
The Island card 236a from the 2009 Zendikar expansion represents the introduction of full-art basic lands to the Magic: The Gathering base set. This design choice was intended to immerse players in the adventurous, exploration-focused theme of the Zendikar plane, allowing the sweeping landscapes of the world to take center stage without the obstruction of text boxes. The set was conceived as a mechanical and aesthetic departure from previous expansions, emphasizing the untamed, volatile nature of the environment.
The artwork for this specific Island was created by Veronique Meunier, who captured the towering, crystalline monoliths characteristic of the set's setting. The design was received with significant acclaim, fundamentally shifting player demand for basic lands and establishing a new aesthetic standard for the game. Its popularity led to the return of full-art lands in numerous subsequent sets, cementing this particular piece as an iconic example of how visual storytelling can enhance the functional components of a trading card game.
