Where it came from
The Island card from the Planechase Anthology, released in 2016, serves as part of a comprehensive collection designed to support the multiplayer Planechase format. This anthology was curated by Wizards of the Coast to bring together out-of-print cards and decks from the earlier Planechase releases, providing players with a cohesive way to experience the chaotic, plane-shifting nature of the game. It was conceived as a retrospective product, intended for both veteran players looking to revisit the mechanics and newcomers interested in the game's broader lore.
The visual design of this specific basic land adheres to the artistic direction of the Zendikar-inspired Planechase environments, characterized by sweeping landscapes and atmospheric color palettes. While basic lands in these sets often utilize artwork from previous releases to maintain thematic continuity, they are selected for their ability to evoke the vast, planar scope that defines the Planechase experience. Upon release, the set was well-received by the community for its accessibility and the high-quality utility it provided to casual multiplayer tables.
