Where it came from
The 1997 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the top players at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship held in Seattle. This specific Island is part of the deck replica belonging to Jakub Slemr, the 1997 World Champion. These cards were produced as non-tournament legal replicas, featuring gold-bordered backs and unique digital signatures on the front, intended to provide fans with an accessible way to experience the high-level strategies used by the world's best players during the competitive season.
The art featured on these lands belongs to the broader aesthetic established for the core Magic: The Gathering sets of the mid-1990s. While these specific cards utilize the standard illustrations found in previous sets, the World Championship printing is distinguished by its unique framing and commemorative gold foil stamping. These decks are highly regarded by collectors for their historical snapshot of the game's evolving competitive meta during a formative era of professional play.
