Where it came from
The Island card, numbered 7 in the European Land Program, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1996 as a promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Distributed primarily through European hobby shops, this set of twenty-five basic land cards was created to bolster the game's international appeal, featuring artwork that departed from the traditional fantasy style found in the core sets of the time.
The illustrations for this specific series were commissioned from Christopher Rush, a foundational artist for the game. For this landscape, Rush utilized a distinct, painterly aesthetic that leaned into a more serene, atmospheric depiction of the environment rather than the high-fantasy tropes common in the early nineties. The cards were received with significant enthusiasm by players and collectors, becoming sought-after for their unique art style and the scarcity of their limited European distribution.
