Where it came from
The Island card from the Limited Edition Alpha set was released in 1993 as part of the original launch of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Created by Richard Garfield, the game was designed to blend the strategic depth of hobby games with the addictive, randomized distribution of trading cards. As one of the five basic land cards, the Island was essential for gameplay, providing the blue mana required to cast spells of that color.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the early history of the game. His design sought to capture a serene, elemental representation of an island amidst the sea, adhering to the stark, early aesthetic of the Alpha set. While these basic lands were printed in large numbers compared to rare cards, the Alpha print run remains highly significant to collectors as the inaugural appearance of the game in its finalized format.
