Where it came from
The 2002 World Championship Decks were a limited-run release designed to replicate the exact 60-card decks used by the top players at the 2002 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These cards were produced not for tournament play, but as a collectible window into the competitive meta-game, featuring gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures of the professional players who piloted them.
The Island card included in this set features the iconic artwork by Rob Alexander, originally commissioned for the Odyssey expansion. Alexander’s landscape style, characterized by tranquil, atmospheric vistas, became a staple of the game’s aesthetic during this era. While the card itself is mechanically identical to its standard printings, its inclusion in the 2002 commemorative decks serves as a testament to the essential role basic lands played in the resource-heavy control and tempo strategies that dominated the professional circuit that year.
