Where it came from
The 1998 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own exact replicas of the decks used by the top eight finishers at the 1998 Magic: The Gathering World Championships. These cards are distinguished from standard game pieces by their gold-bordered backs and the signature of the professional player printed on the front, ensuring they remain distinct from tournament-legal cards and are intended primarily for display or casual play.
The Island card included in this set uses the iconic artwork originally illustrated by Richard Thomas, which first appeared in the Alpha release of the game. Thomas was a pivotal early art director for Magic: The Gathering, and his minimalist, evocative approach to basic land cards helped define the visual language of the game's early sets, emphasizing a sense of atmosphere and exploration that has remained a hallmark of the franchise for decades.
