Provenance

Where it came from

The Asia Pacific Land Program was released in 1996 as a promotional expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created to celebrate the growing community of players in the Asia-Pacific region, the set featured a series of twenty-five unique basic land cards, with each of the five land types represented by five distinct pieces of landscape art. These cards were distributed through regional tournament play and specialized gift boxes, making them a significant departure from the standard art rotations found in base expansion sets.

The artwork for Island 12 was created by artist Rob Alexander, who was a frequent contributor to the game during its early years. Alexander was known for his mastery of atmospheric landscapes and natural textures, and for this series, he focused on depicting serene, distinctly regional vistas that moved away from the more fantastical or gritty aesthetic common in other sets of the era. The cards were well-received by players and collectors alike, who valued the high-quality, evocative illustrations and the relative scarcity of the set compared to the mass-market printings of the time.
