Where it came from
The Island card from the Scars of Mirrodin set, released in 2010, represents a pivotal return to the metal-infused plane of Mirrodin. This set marked a significant narrative shift, as the world was being gradually corrupted by the Phyrexian oil, a theme reflected in the stark, biomechanical art direction that distinguishes this iteration from the original 2003 Mirrodin block.
The landscape was illustrated by Jung Park, who utilized a clean, digital aesthetic to emphasize the artificial yet vast nature of Mirrodin's geography. The design focuses on the iconic 'mirrors' and crystalline structures of the plane, aiming to convey a sense of cold, clinical beauty that stood in contrast to the organic landscapes typically found in Magic: The Gathering, receiving praise for its atmospheric immersion into a dying mechanical world.
