Where it came from
The Island card from the Magic 2014 (M14) Core Set, designated as collector number 235, was released in July 2013. As a basic land, it serves as one of the fundamental building blocks of the game, providing the blue mana necessary to cast spells. The M14 set marked a transition period for Wizards of the Coast, as they refined the core set experience to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while maintaining strategic depth for established veterans.
This specific illustration was created by artist Noah Bradley, known for his atmospheric and sprawling landscape style. Bradley's work for the set leaned into a sense of scale and natural beauty, emphasizing the vast, serene quality of the island environment. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its clean, evocative aesthetic that felt distinctly modern while fitting seamlessly into the long-standing tradition of Magic: The Gathering land art.
