Where it came from
Released in October 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this basic Island card represents the series' departure into a setting heavily inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology. Wizards of the Coast utilized this set to explore a top-down design approach, shifting away from the high-fantasy Western tropes that dominated previous releases to focus on spirits, shinto, and the interplay between the mortal and spirit realms.
The artwork for this specific card, number 292, was rendered by artist John Avon, a cornerstone illustrator for the game's landscape art. Avon sought to capture the ethereal, tranquil essence of the Kamigawa plane through a distinct, soft-focus aesthetic that highlighted the vibrant, otherworldly nature of the landscape. Upon release, the set was noted for its striking visual departure from standard Magic art, and Avon’s landscapes were particularly praised for their immersive quality and ability to evoke a sense of quiet wonder.
