Where it came from
The Island card from the Battle for Zendikar set, specifically the 255a variant, was released by Wizards of the Coast in October 2015. This set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and adventurous spirit, which prompted the design team to emphasize the land cards as central to the visual identity of the expansion. The set introduced full-art basic lands, a stylistic choice that aimed to highlight the vast, otherworldly vistas of the plane by removing the text box boundaries.
This particular artwork was created by the illustrator Veronique Meignaud. Her design approach for these lands focused on ethereal, painterly textures and vibrant color palettes that evoke the surreal environment of the Zendikar plane. The inclusion of full-art basics was widely received as a highlight of the set, appealing to both competitive players who valued the aesthetic impact on the battlefield and collectors who appreciated the commitment to immersive world-building through landscape illustration.
