Where it came from
The 2002 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the high-level strategies used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. Each deck contained a complete 60-card list and sideboard, replicating the exact configurations played by the top contenders. These cards feature a distinct gold-bordered back and the player's signature on the front, serving as a commemorative look at the professional competitive meta of that era.
This specific Island card, numbered cr335, comes from the deck piloted by Carlos Romao, who famously won the 2002 World Championship with his 'Psychatog' control build. The card features the classic artwork by Rob Alexander, a staple of early Magic landscape illustration. While the art itself was originally commissioned for the Odyssey set, its inclusion in the World Championship series celebrated the specific aesthetic and mechanical choices that defined Romao’s successful run to the championship title.
