Where it came from
The 1996 Arena League Island, identified as collector number 2, emerged during a pivotal era for Magic: The Gathering. As the game transitioned from its early years toward a more structured competitive landscape, Wizards of the Coast experimented with promotional materials to support the burgeoning store-level tournament scene known as the Arena League. These cards were designed to incentivize participation, rewarding players with unique, aesthetically distinct versions of basic lands that showcased the game's expansive art direction.
The illustration for this specific Island was rendered by the artist NéNé Thomas. Known for her ethereal and detailed fantasy style, Thomas was tasked with providing a fresh visual identity that stood out from the standard core set lands available at the time. The design emphasized a serene, atmospheric quality, reflecting a deliberate shift toward more polished and thematic landscape art that would eventually become a staple of promotional Magic releases throughout the late nineties.
