Island

The Island card numbered 237 from the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar is one of a cycle of full-art basic lands that redefined the aesthetic standards for the game. Created during a development phase focused on the theme of exploration and adventure, these cards were designed to showcase the wild, untamed landscapes of the plane of Zendikar. By extending the art to the edges of the card, the design team emphasized the scale and immersion of the world, marking a significant departure from the traditional frame used for over a decade.

This specific iteration was illustrated by Véronique Meignaud, whose vibrant, surreal style brought an otherworldly quality to the landscape. Her vision for the Zendikar terrain was praised for its bold color palette and unconventional composition, which moved away from the more literal interpretations of islands seen in previous sets. The full-art treatment was so well received by the community that it became a highly sought-after collector's item, setting a precedent for future premium card treatments in the game.
