Where it came from
The Island card from the Magic: The Gathering Classic Sixth Edition set was released in 1999 as part of a significant overhaul of the game's core rules and presentation. This edition served as the first base set to incorporate the modern rules engine, moving away from the more experimental mechanics of the early 1990s to establish a standardized foundation for competitive play.
The artwork for this specific Island was created by the artist Rob Alexander, whose work is highly regarded for its atmospheric portrayal of landscapes. The design features a serene, lush tropical coastline, reflecting Alexander's signature style of using soft light and balanced composition to create an immersive sense of place. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its classic aesthetic, becoming a staple basic land for decks throughout the late 1990s and beyond.
