Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, offering players the opportunity to own exact replicas of the decks used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. These cards feature gold-bordered backs and signatures of the players, distinguishing them from standard tournament-legal cards and making them ineligible for sanctioned competitive play.
This specific Island card is a reproduction of the basic land artwork utilized in the 2001 decks. The design follows the aesthetic established during the Invasion block, reflecting the high-fantasy illustrative style prominent in Magic during that era. While the cards were primarily intended for casual play and as historical artifacts of the competitive meta, they remain popular among collectors for their unique visual markers and their role in documenting the history of professional Magic play.
