Where it came from
Released in May 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion, this Island serves as one of the fundamental land cards for the set. The set depicts the final triumph of the Phyrexians on the plane of Mirrodin, and this card specifically reflects the bleak, industrial aesthetic imposed by the invading forces. It belongs to a cycle of basic lands designed to illustrate the transformation of the natural landscape into a metallic, inhospitable nightmare.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Jung Park, who leaned into the biomechanical horror synonymous with the Phyrexian faction. By emphasizing sharp, unnatural geometries and a muted, sickly color palette, the design successfully conveys the complete subjugation of the plane's environment. The card was well-received by players for its thematic consistency, standing out as a stark contrast to the more organic or ethereal aesthetics typically found in Magic: The Gathering land designs.
