Where it came from
The Island card from the Magic Origins set, released in 2015, serves as a fundamental basic land within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to function as the core resource provider for decks utilizing blue mana, featuring artwork by the veteran illustrator Adam Paquette. This set was unique in its role as a retrospective foundation for the game, aiming to flesh out the backstories of the five iconic Planeswalker characters before they ascended to power.
Adam Paquette's contribution to the set emphasized the epic, cinematic scale of Magic's world-building, focusing on ethereal, sprawling landscapes that evoke a sense of ancient history. The design language of the Magic Origins basic lands was noted for its clean aesthetic and atmospheric lighting, which sought to maintain the classic feel of the game while updating the visual standards for modern players. The set was generally well-received by the community for its successful blend of narrative depth and streamlined gameplay mechanics.
