Where it came from
The Island card from the Magic 2014 (M14) Core Set, bearing collector number 236, was released in July 2013. Like all basic lands in the Core Set, it serves as the foundational resource for blue-aligned decks, providing the mana necessary to cast spells. The release of M14 marked a significant moment in the game's history as the final Core Set to feature a specific card frame design before the transition to modern layout updates.
This particular illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose signature atmospheric and painterly style is well-regarded within the Magic: The Gathering community. Hamm designed this landscape to evoke a sense of serene, ethereal isolation typical of blue mana sources, moving away from more literal interpretations of geography toward a more abstract, moody aesthetic that became a hallmark of his work during this era of the game.
