Where it came from
The 2002 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a series of non-tournament-legal reproductions of the decks used by the top players at the 2002 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These products were created to provide fans with a chance to play with cards modeled after the successful strategies of professional players, featuring gold-bordered backs and distinct card faces that prevented them from being used in standard competitive play.
The Island card from this set specifically reproduces the artwork and layout used during the 7th Edition era of the game. Designed by Rob Alexander, this particular landscape illustration depicts a serene, mist-covered tropical scene that became a hallmark of the set's aesthetic. Because these cards were mass-produced as complete boxed decks rather than found in randomized booster packs, the design was intended to replicate the exact utility of the professional decks while serving as a collectible artifact for those who followed the competitive circuit.
