Where it came from
The Island card numbered 235a from the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar is one of the most recognizable examples of 'full-art' basic lands. Released during a period when Wizards of the Coast sought to emphasize the importance of the environment in the Zendikar block, these lands were designed to highlight the game's focus on exploration and adventure by removing the traditional text box frame, allowing the artwork to occupy the entire face of the card.
The piece was illustrated by Veronique Meqauere, who utilized a vibrant, sweeping landscape aesthetic that became synonymous with the set’s theme. Upon release, the design was met with significant enthusiasm from the player community, setting a new standard for collectible basic lands and influencing the visual direction of many subsequent Magic: The Gathering sets that featured similar borderless treatments.
