Where it came from
The Island card from the Battle for Zendikar set, specifically collector number 259, was released by Wizards of the Coast in October 2015. This set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and the presence of the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. The design objective for this cycle of basic lands was to emphasize the 'full-art' aesthetic, a fan-favorite format that features expansive, borderless landscape illustrations, allowing the artwork to occupy nearly the entire face of the card.
This particular illustration was crafted by artist Noah Bradley, known for his ability to render vast, atmospheric vistas. Bradley’s interpretation of the Zendikar landscape sought to capture the ethereal, floating geography characteristic of the plane, using a palette that highlights the mystical nature of the Island. Upon its release, the full-art series was highly anticipated by the Magic: The Gathering community, receiving significant acclaim for its immersive visual storytelling and its departure from traditional card frame constraints.
