Where it came from
The 1999 Arena League Island is part of a promotional cycle of basic lands released to support the Arena League, a tournament series designed to foster grassroots competitive Magic: The Gathering play at local game stores. These cards were distributed as participation rewards during the 1999 season, intended to incentivize regular attendance at sanctioned events and provide players with unique, aesthetically distinct versions of the fundamental resource cards required for deck building.
The illustration was created by artist Rob Alexander, who is widely recognized for his extensive contributions to the game's landscape art. Tasked with providing a fresh look for the core lands, Alexander utilized his signature style to create a lush, atmospheric perspective of an island setting. The design was well-received by the player base for its evocative lighting and departure from the standard set-release aesthetics of the era, solidifying its status as a sought-after staple among landscape collectors.
